Biography

Counterpoint
Counterpoint was originally formed in August 1998 by current band
members Joy Smith, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, and Wally
Alford, resonator guitarist. Clyde Jones, on bass, helped form the core
of the band early on. Bobby Cleland, on guitar, and Clint Childers, on
mandolin, lend both lead and harmony vocals to the group's total sound.
Harold Roper, banjo, has been a member of the group for about two
years. He can make a five-string "talk" and also sings lead and harmony
vocals. All the members of the group have had years of experience
playing in bluegrass, country and gospel groups. Joy has had the unique
experience of performing on the Grand Ole Opry and making appearances
on TNN. Joy has performed with bluegrass and country music greats such
as Bill Monroe, Ricky Skaggs, Johnny Russell, Jan Howard, Box Car
Willie, Norma Jean, Lori Morgan and many other Opry performers. She and
Wally are members of the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Honor. Clyde,
while playing bass, vocally adds a unique dimension to the band's sound
with his silky, smooth vocal renditions. Wally is known throughout the
Atlanta area as one of the best "dobro" players around, and his great
ear for harmony helps produce Counterpoint's renowned vocal
arrangements. The group not only works well together, but they're great
friends and that comes across during their performances.
The musical term "counterpoint" refers to the blending of two distinct
melodies into one. The term also refers to the expression of a
different point of view. Each performance is one where the band
considers the audience a part of the show. The music of Counterpoint is
a unique blend of music ranging from hard-core bluegrass to old-time
country and offers a versatility of sound to please every ear.
